About Maine Coons// American Forest Cat// Maine Shag// Gentle Giant

The Maine Coon cat is the largest of domesticated cat breeds. Its known for its long coat, lion like mane which grows in completely around 4 years of age. The coat of the Maine Coon is dense with two coats that feel like silk. An interesting characteristic is that the coat drapes longer behind the legs (britches) but is shorter over the shoulders and the males have a lion like mane.

Its muzzle is big and ear tufts long. To compliment its natural beauty, Its also an incredible hunter and as an outdoor breed, it’s original position was to eliminate rodents from home + farm.

Maine coons have an outgoing dog-like personality and can adapt to many living conditions but they need room to exercise. The Maine coon thrives with daily play and affection. They are sweet tempered and appreciate a daily brushing.

There is mythology around the origin of the Maine coon. From Marie Antoinette and her prized Turkish Vans to Siberian cats. It’s most likely that when Vikings came to North America they travelled here with a few of their cats (relative of Norwegian Forest Cats) and they bred with the native american cat population creating this breed. Their large, robust coat and hefty bone structure is just made for Winter, and the Vikings landed just north of Maines territory.

Whatever its origin, its majestic being is a perfect lion like addition to your family!
